Suspects to appear in court after Pretoria North arrest

The occupants of a silver VW Polo were arrested after police intercepted their vehicle following reports of suspicious activity. Authorities say a search uncovered an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, housebreaking implements and crystal meth.

Four suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court later this week.

The four were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, housebreaking implements, and drugs during an operation in Pretoria North on Tuesday morning.

The arrests followed a community tip-off regarding a suspicious silver VW Polo that was allegedly driving around residential areas with several occupants behaving suspiciously.

According to Pretoria North SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Tumisang Moloto, authorities immediately assembled an integrated law enforcement team to trace the vehicle.

“Police received information about a suspicious vehicle driving around.

“An integrated team was immediately assembled and followed up on the information until the suspects’ vehicle was intercepted along Bakenkloof Street,” said Moloto.

Police managed to stop the vehicle at the corner of Bakenkloof and Wonderboom streets, where a search of the car allegedly led to the discovery of an unlicensed revolver with ammunition, housebreaking implements and crystal methamphetamine.

The four occupants were immediately arrested and detained at Pretoria North Police Station for further investigation.

Moloto confirmed that one of the suspects has also been linked to a reported housebreaking incident in the area and is being investigated as a possible intruder connected to the case.

The arrests have been welcomed by Pretoria North Station Commander Colonel Nonzwakasi Julla, who praised the co-ordinated efforts of the various law enforcement agencies and private security role players involved in the operation.

Julla said the successful operation demonstrates the importance of co-operation between the police, private security companies and the community in combating crime.

She also thanked residents for providing information that assists police in responding quickly to criminal activity and removing illegal firearms from communities.

Moloto said the latest arrests form part of ongoing crime prevention efforts in Pretoria North aimed at tackling housebreaking, vehicle-related crimes, illegal firearms and drug-related offences.

The suspects remain in custody and are expected to formally apply for bail when they appear in court later this week.
