Wierda Park community drives revival efforts to build safer neighbourhoods
Community initiatives led in partnership with the Wierda Park Residents Association are strengthening safety, social support and local engagement, as residents take a more active role in shaping the future of their neighbourhood.
Community-driven action is steadily reshaping Wierda Park into a more connected and responsive neighbourhood, with residents increasingly positioned at the centre of safety, support, and local development efforts.
At the heart of this transformation is the Wierda Park Residents Association (WPRA), which, according to chairperson Liza Vorster, exists to strengthen co-ordination between residents, authorities, and service partners while encouraging individuals to take active ownership of their community.
From Vorster’s perspective, the foundation of any meaningful progress begins with participation. She explained that community involvement is not optional but essential for the survival and growth of the area.
“Community involvement is fundamental to strengthening Wierda Park. The residents themselves are the most critical component in building a stronger, safer, and more connected community,” she said.
Vorster emphasised that without active participation, even the strongest systems cannot succeed.
She further explained that safety and service delivery cannot rest on the shoulders of a single institution.
Instead, they depend on co-operation between residents, businesses, security structures, and authorities.
In her view, neighbour-to-neighbour support is what transforms a collection of households into a functioning community.
“Such relationships build trust, improve communication, and create shared responsibility, ultimately resulting in a more resilient and unified community.”
Over the past two years, the WPRA has focused on rebuilding these social connections through a series of initiatives aimed at restoring engagement and strengthening community ties.
Since mid-2023, the association has implemented ongoing awareness and engagement efforts to grow membership and improve communication between residents.
The WPRA has also partnered closely with safety organisations, including the CPF and private security providers, to align on local safety priorities and improve co-ordinated response efforts.
Vorster stated that these collaborations have been reinforced through stakeholder engagement sessions and awareness campaigns focused on reporting structures, communication channels, and collective responsibility in maintaining safety and order.

One of the most impactful social initiatives introduced by the WPRA has been its work with senior residents.
“In 2024, we started hosting a senior pensioners morning designed to create a welcoming and inclusive space for elderly members of the community,” she said.
“Refreshments are sponsored by WPRA members, entertainment is provided by a live singer, and seniors gather in a relaxed environment specifically for connection and recognition.”
She explained that the initiative was intended to ensure dignity and inclusion for older residents, while also reducing isolation.
Its impact, however, extended beyond the event itself, helping to reconnect senior residents socially and strengthening appreciation across generations.
Looking ahead, the WPRA plans to expand these efforts through a strengthened senior citizens programme that will offer ongoing engagement opportunities.
The association is also preparing to reinstate environmental and health-related portfolios while creating broader platforms to increase resident participation in community life.
“Safety remains our central focus, and we are currently developing phased camera enclosure projects across Wierda Park to improve monitoring and co-ordinated response capabilities,” added Vorster.
Another major concern is streetlighting, with Vorster noting that the area is affected by inadequate lighting, which directly impacts resident safety.
To address emergency response and service co-ordination, the association is partnering with ICE Community Network to introduce centralised emergency and medical dispatch services, live tracking systems, and co-ordinated missing persons support.
These measures are intended to strengthen response times and improve overall safety oversight in the area.
“Youth development is also being prioritised as part of our long-term vision, with a proposed youth portfolio aimed at empowering young people through leadership development, mentorship and active participation in community projects. The goal is to build future leaders while encouraging meaningful engagement in safety, environmental and social initiatives.”
Beyond youth and seniors, the WPRA is also exploring wider support structures for vulnerable residents and families in need.
These include community-based assistance programmes, stronger co-ordination with welfare organisations, and structured response mechanisms during emergencies.
Additional consideration is being given to trauma support services, including a potential community-based trauma support centre, safe space programmes for affected individuals, and initiatives addressing gender-based violence.
Vorster described the WPRA’s role as that of a facilitator rather than a replacement for formal structures.
She emphasised that the association aims to strengthen co-ordination, enable structured programmes, and promote inclusion and well-being through active participation.
“Central to this vision is collaboration with a wide network of stakeholders, including emergency services, local businesses, the South African Police Service, the City of Tshwane, and other community organisations. These partnerships are essential for a holistic approach to community safety and development,” she said.
She also encouraged residents of Wierda Park and surrounding areas to join the WPRA, participate in initiatives, and contribute their skills to local projects.
“A stronger neighbourhood is built by its residents through participation, partnership, and a shared commitment to a safer, more connected community.”
