The Silverton Community Policing Sub-Forum (CPSF) has warned residents to be more cautious, as motor vehicle-related crimes, such as theft from vehicles, have spiked in the east precinct.
The Silverton policing precinct ranks 28th in the country for theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, out of over 1 164 police stations countrywide, in the latest crime statistics.
Th CPSF Sector 3 warned that the growing trend in these crimes has become a serious concern for residents, especially when visiting public places such as shopping centres.
The CPSF has highlighted the need for stronger police visibility and proactive crime prevention measures.
CPSF Deputy Chair Juan Lee Olivier said the forum has noticed these crimes occurring in neighbouring areas of Silverton, such as Weavind Park, La Montagne, Equestria, and Nellmapius.
Olivier warned motorists to keep their valuables out of sight, as goods left lying around attract criminals.
She added that people needed to be aware of their surroundings.
Olivier said vehicles parked outside schools, small businesses, shopping centres and at fuel stations are targeted for theft.
“Motorists should stop hiding their valuables when they arrive at their destinations, as you might never know who is watching; rather, put your stuff safely in the boot when you depart from home, in that way nobody knows what you have in your car,” the deputy chair said.
“Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a well-lit area, preferably where there are security cameras or in a high-traffic location. Thieves are less likely to target a vehicle in highly visible areas,” she added.
She said people should also double-check if their vehicles are safely locked before walking away.

Always remember to lock or close your car doors and windows when parking. This simple step will deter many opportunistic thieves.
Improve your vehicle’s security by installing a car alarm, steering wheel lock, or tracking device. These devices can deter thieves and increase your chances of recovering your vehicle if it is stolen.
When refuelling your vehicle, do not leave it unattended. Thieves often target vehicles left unattended, even briefly, at fuel stations.
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially when leaving or approaching your vehicle. If you notice any suspicious individual, report them immediately.
Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a secure area. These spots usually have surveillance cameras and security, reducing the risk of theft.
