In an effort to sensitise inner-city youth to crime and a career in the police, the Pretoria Central Police Station hosted a group of kids from the Rea Day Care Centre for a tour of the premises.

The centre, based in Salvokop, works with children aged 3 months to 6 years.

Station spokesperson, Sergeant Thabang Nkhumise, stated that the visit would be a continuous effort, inviting other schools, day care centres, high learning institutions to also educate them about careers they can pursue within the SAPS.

“We do understand that the children are based in an area that is a bit disadvantaged and has had several issues, such as domestic violence, substance abuse, lawlessness, and other related concerns that might hinder their safety and wellbeing. A special thank you to the Principal, Mrs Itumeleng Mahlobogane, teacher Kagisho Legoabe and the social worker at the victim empowerment room and Partnership Policing.

“We urge parents to be actively involved in their children’s wellbeing and give support to the teachers and police to win the fight against bullying, harassment, substance abuse, and other related matters that hinder learning in schools,” Sergeant Nkhumise said.

The tour featured various components in the station to educate the kids and also instil a culture of reporting any form of crime that might pose a threat in their future.

They were taken to the victim centre room, where they were engaged with and given goodies.

Furthermore, the kids were allowed to take pictures and interact with the crime prevention team, led by Captain Mogotsi, and the inspection team from Province Support, who was also present.
