Family fears for safety after accused in Delmas shooting granted bail

A mother says she does not know how to tell her terrified daughter that the accused in the Delmas shooting has been granted R13 000 bail.

A mother whose husband and 10-year-old daughter were shot and injured in an alleged Delmas shooting says she does not know how to tell her terrified child that the accused has been granted bail.

The shocked mother told Rekord on Thursday, October 22, that the family fears for its safety after the 62-year-old accused was granted R13 000 bail that morning.

She added that, according to her understanding of the proceedings, only two of his fourteen firearms have been confiscated. Whether any firearms have been seized has not been independently confirmed.

The accused faces three charges of attempted murder. The family’s identities and the accused’s name are being withheld to protect the minor child.

According to allegations presented in court, a dispute over money escalated after the accused allegedly lured a contractor, his wife and their daughter to a farm.

He allegedly pursued their vehicle for approximately 20 kilometres, fired more than 15 shots and attempted to force them off the road.

Rekord previously reported that the incident happened on October 8, between 13:00 and 14:00. According to the mother, the pursuit took place in the Boschkop area.

Her husband was shot in the arm, while their daughter sustained a gunshot wound to her arm and received stitches.

The woman previously described how the child scrambled behind her father’s seat for cover as bullets struck their bakkie.

“My husband shouted for our daughter to duck and take cover. She slipped behind his seat,” she said.

Her husband continued driving while she tried to stop his bleeding, removing her dress and wrapping it around his injured arm.

According to her account, the accused followed them in his bakkie and continued firing, repeatedly trying to force their vehicle off the road.

She said he also pulled ahead of them and shouted for them to pull over so they could talk, before allegedly firing again.

Attempts to contact police and a friend for help were unsuccessful during the chaos.

The family eventually turned into another farm, where their bakkie’s engine seized. They ran towards a workshop for assistance.

“I told my daughter to run as soon as the bakkie stopped. I jumped out in my slip and ran,” the woman said.

She said more than 15 bullet holes were subsequently found in the vehicle.

“It is a miracle that we were not killed,” she said.

The accused has not been convicted, and the allegations remain subject to court proceedings.
