Could history be made in the 2022 Melbourne Cup? All bets are on yes, with two of the jockeys set to ride in the $8 million Flemington showpiece and bidding to become the joint most successful in the history of the world famous race.

It is the elite goal of every hoop in Australia to ride the winner of the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November. Only a select bunch have achieved it and an even more select group have done so on more than one occasion.

Now, ahead of the 2022 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, November 1, Bets.com.au takes a look at the most successful Melbourne Cup jockeys as Damien Oliver and Kerrin McEvoy bid to create a historic moment with another victory at Flemington.

Both jockeys have won the Spring Carnival feature three times. Victory this year would elevate them to four-time champions alongside the only two other jockeys to have achieved that feat – Bobbie Lewis and Harry White.

Sitting on top with four Melbourne Cup wins each are Lewis, who was an early star when winning the race in 1902, 1915, 1919 and 1927, and White, whose success came more recently in 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.

McEvoy and Oliver are the only current day jockeys who have three wins in their name and either one could join Lewis and White if luck goes their way in 2022.

McEvoy’s victories came in 2000 on board Brew, in 2016 riding Almandin and in 2018 when steering Cross Counter to victory.

Oliver’s three wins came in a 19-year stretch during a memorable run in the race as he partnered Doriemus to victory in 1995, Media Puzzle to success in 2002 and most recently Fiorente to win in 2013.

Both are odds on favourites to get win number four on the board with McEvoy set to ride favourite Deauville Legend and Oliver set to be on board Durston. Can either one make history as the packed crowds return to Flemington on Cup Day?

The pair sit alongside five other jockeys on three wins in the race, the best of them perhaps being Glen Boss, who achieved his trio all on board the great Makybe Diva as she landed an unprecedented hat-trick between 2003-2005.

Before him, William H. McLachlan won the race three times in 1909, 1910 and 1917, Darby Munro matched it in 1934, 1944 and 1955, Jack Purcell          did it in 1947, 1953 and 1954 and Jim Johnson was successful in 1963, 1968 and 1969.
