Tshwane finance MMC will serve as acting mayor – while Williams takes leave
Members of the mayoral committee will continue to serve in their positions until February 28.

Finance MMC Peter Sutton will serve as Tshwane’s acting mayor after outgoing mayor Randall Williams has put in leave ahead of his resignation day.
This was according to the Tshwane speaker of council Dr Murunwa Makwarela’s office.
Makwarela said that Williams was, however, still the mayor until February 28.
This comes as the special council meeting scheduled for Wednesday about Williams’ resignation was cancelled.
Councillors were supposed to resolve at the meeting when exactly Williams would vacate his office after tendering two written resignations.
Williams resigned on February 13 effective at midnight on the same day.
However, after “consultations with various political parties” he said that he will only vacate the office on February 28.
The spokesperson for the speaker in Tshwane, Vanessa de Sousa, said the members of the mayoral committee would continue to serve in their positions until February 28.
EFF Tshwane chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu this week rejected Williams’ “fraudulent” attempt to return to the office of the municipality after resigning.
“Williams should understand, more than anybody, as a legal practitioner that his assertions are illegal, unsustainable, and inconsistent with the powers invested in the municipal council to elect a mayor once a vacancy exists,” said Ramabodu.
He said that Williams “could not unilaterally assume the powers of the municipal council by appointing an acting executive mayor to take charge of the mayoral office following his exit”.
Ramabodu said the speaker should activate the council process to elect a new executive mayor.
“We call upon him to uphold Williams’ letter of resignation as effective February 13, at midnight.”
