Gauteng motorists opt for online car licence renewals
“The online system now works efficiently.”

The SA Post Office has recorded a “healthy” uptake for the use of their recently launched online car licence renewals in Gauteng, it says.
SA Post Office spokesperson Johan Kruger said the state-owned enterprise recorded more than 37 000 vehicle licences renewed nationally through the system, “most of them in Gauteng”.
This was after their online system on www.sapomvl.co.za which was launched in January, struggled with “teething problems”.
“It now works efficiently,” said Kruger.
The system allows for the full renewal process, including payment, to be submitted online and for the licence disc delivered in two ways.
The SA Post Office either can deliver the disc to the customer for a R75 delivery fee or the disc can be collected free of charge from a post office branch selected by the customer.
Kruger said payments were secure through the bank’s Masterpass App.
“It can be downloaded from any application store for smart devices.
“The Post Office is licensed to do car licence renewals and, for that reason, no commission is charged on the renewal transaction.”
He said the online renewal facility for motor vehicle licences did not replace the prior renewal service available at selected branches.
“Many customers prefer to pay their licence and leave immediately with the new licence, which they can do at a post office branch.
“As with the online renewal, the customer pays only the licence fee as it appears on the renewal notice and the post office does not charge any commission.”
