Suspected bicycle thief nabbed in Laudium
The 27-year-old suspect had the bicycle reported stolen in his possession.
Laudium police arrested a 27-year-old man in possession of a stolen bicycle over the weekend, following a tip-off.
Spokesperson Sergeant Simon Chokoe said police acted swiftly on information that a man was stealing bicycles in the area and spotted someone matching the description given on Sapphire Street.
He said police approached him and a bicycle reported to have been stolen was found in his possession.
Chokoe said the suspect couldn’t account for the items in his possession and was immediately arrested for suspected possession of stolen property.
In a separate incident, police in Laudium arrested a man in possession of live ammunition during street patrols.
Chokoe said the suspicious 33-year-old was located on Brown Street carrying a bag.
“Upon searching the suspect, six live ammunition rounds were found in his possession which he couldn’t account for,” he said
“He was immediately arrested for the unlawful possession of ammunition.”
The police also held an operation to inspect taverns around Laudium.
Six illegal taverns were shut down in Itireleng informal settlement and alcohol was confiscated.
He said six suspects were nabbed for selling alcohol without a licence.
More people were arrested for being in the country without documents, drinking in public, possession of suspected drugs and contravening the second-hand goods act during the operation.
“We will continue to be more visible in our community and more stop-and-searches will be held,” he said.
Laudium police station commander Lieutenant Colonel David Sithole applauded the officers for their continuous good work and success.
Sithole urged the community to continue working closely with the police on fighting crime by reporting suspicious persons to the local police or on 08600 10111.
