TUT sports faculty recruits Mamelodi learners

TUT Pretoria Campus, Sport and Recreation, community outreach programme to share information about the university and its services with Ribane Laka high school learners.

TUT Sport Pretoria campus aims to recruit more Mamelodi learners to the university and its sport clubs.

The university, in collaboration with Keamogetse M Foundation, visited Ribane Laka secondary school last Friday for a career expo and to encourage learners to take sports very seriously.

Kegoikantse “Machesa” Kgomo, campus HOD said the event was a community outreach programme by TUT Pretoria Campus, Sport and Recreation to share information with learners about the university and its services.

She said this information included the courses on offer at TUT, application process, bursary and NSFAS information as well as sport programmes.

They also provided motivation to the learners as a social responsibility.

“It was a key platform for recruitment,” said Machesa.

Keamogestwe Masike (24) formed his namesake foundation to better the lives of youth by addressing the socio-economic challenges they faced such as depression, suicide, GBV and femicide, alcohol and drug abuse especially at this time.

He is the current SRC Sport and Culture Officer at the Pretoria campus.

“The youth are in the most important phase of their life, preparing for the final matric exams so we felt that we had a responsibility to motivate and encourage these students to do better.”

Ribane Laka is one of the most disadvantaged schools but also one of the best performing schools around Tshwane.

Masike added the school boasted a matric pass rate of 88% to 100% in the last few years. “It is evident that we needed to assist wherever we can.”

He said the school had more than 300 matriculants this year.

Among the visitors was Nkateko Nkhuna, a women’s football player in the u.17 national team and Ribane Laka former learner.

“Mamelodi Sundowns, Daniel Mudau, Newsroom Afrika, Tshegohaco Moagi are just a few examples of prominent individuals who motivated us to collaborate with the school,” said Masike.

Ribane Laka principal Martha Ngoma said: “We are humbled to be chosen by TUT.

“The visit gave the learners an opportunity to apply to further their studies at TUT.”

The learners received goodies and certificates for the hard work they have done preparing for the final year exam so far.
