Three caught stealing transformer in Bronkhorstspruit
Three suspects were caught attempting to steal a mini-substation transformer.
Three suspects were arrested after they tried to steal a mini substation transformer in Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit.
Utilities and regional operations MMC Daryl Johnston said the incident happened in the early hours of Friday last week.
Johnston said community members caught the suspects in the act and stopped them from further damaging metro infrastructure.
He said the police were called and the community helped to identify the suspects and they were immediately arrested.
“The Tshwane metro would like to acknowledge and express its gratitude to Zithobeni residents for their intervention to prevent the theft of a local mini-substation transformer,” he said.
“The residents were able to lead by example and prevent the destruction of critical infrastructure that is meant to serve their community.”
Johnston called on communities to work with the metro to prevent attacks on city infrastructure.
“Vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure affect everyone and it is important to work together to stop criminals from destroying community infrastructure.
“Tampering, vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure will never be tolerated,” Johnston said.
“By working with our communities and law enforcement authorities, we will ensure that we go after these criminals and institute legal action against them.”
Two of the suspects are out on bail after appearing in court and one is still in police custody.
