Blast from mine sends rock through roof

According to ward councillor David Farquharson, an explosion at the mine had sent multiple rocks raining from the sky around 15:30.

A tech consultant got a shock of his life when a rock from a nearby mine smashed through the ceiling of his home in Lyttelton on Friday afternoon.

Hofni Schoeman was sitting on a chair working on his computer when he was interrupted by a noise.

The bewildered consultant realised that a rock had fallen through the roof and hit a steel dustbin a mere two metres from him.

Fortunately nobody was injured.

Debris scattered everywhere after a rock smashed through the roof.

He said his tenant had been so traumatised by the event that he no longer felt safe in the house knowing the mine is so close.

He said the mine quickly sent a team of technicians to clean up the debris and repair the damage as best they could.

Community activists Chris Angles and Russel Marshall will assist the ensuring investigation.

The rock smashed through the roof.

Farquharson said that he and ward councillor Johan van Buuren will ensure that all safety regulations are being followed.

The mine manager declined to comment.
