Tshwane metro police unwittingly thwarted a hijacking when they stopped a truck they suspected was overloaded with passengers on the R101 last Wednesday.
“Our officers flagged down a truck when they noticed that the cabin was overloaded with passengers,” said metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.
Mahamba said when the truck stopped, three men got out and fled into the Bon Accord informal settlement.
“The officers searched the truck and found the driver tied up,” he said.
“The trucker told the officers that he was a hijack victim.
“While driving on the N1 highway, a white BMW with blue lights had stopped him.
“He said he further noticed a Nissan Navara was behind his truck.
“Men got out of the BMW and forced him off the driver’s seat at gunpoint then duct-taped his mouth, hands and legs.
“The men then drove off with him.”
Mahamba said the suspects are still at large and a manhunt for them was underway.
He urged members of the public who might have any information about this incident to contact the nearest police or TMPD at 012 358 7095/6
