Mini sport tournament keeps children off the streets
The purpose of the tournament was to encourage children to participate in different sports activities.
A sports organisation in Mamelodi held a mini tournament for boys and girls to celebrate Women’s Month at Rethabile sports ground on Tuesday.
Motheo wa Tsebo sports development foundation’s Gideon Nyatlo said this was their first annual mini netball and soccer tournament to celebrate Women’s month.
The first phase of the tournament featured u.15 boys soccer teams, the second u.13 netball team and the third senior soccer team.
“The purpose of the tournament was to encourage children to participate in different sports activities.
“Mamelodi has a lot of talent and encouraging the children to participate in sport will unleash their hidden talents and help them stay away from drugs, crime and teenage pregnancy,” said Nyatlo.
“Substance abuse is a serious issue amongst our youth and the tournament will help in the never-ending fight against this.”
He added that this is not a once-off tournament, “we are still going to host more tournaments in Mamelodi”.
The foundation was founded last May to focus on improving sport at the grassroots level of the community, school and local clubs.
Nyatlo pleaded with the Tshwane metro to revamp sports and recreational facilities, especially the Rethabile grounds.
Rethabile once had four tennis courts, two basketball courts and three soccer fields but today everything is gone.
He said the tournament was a success but the girls were unable to use the bathrooms at Rethabile because they were vandalised.
There was nothing left of Rethabile except for the soccer field and a few goal posts.
“Even the sports field was in a dire condition and urgently needed repairs,” he added.
He said every participant was a winner on the day as they walked away with medals and overall winners with trophies.
