Residents help keep Centurion clean
A total of 268 bags of litter was cleared from the Hennops River
Residents of ward 69 in Centurion and volunteers helped clean up the corner of Old Johannesburg and Wierda roads on Tuesday morning.
This is a particularly problematic part of Centurion due to the frequent dumping that takes place there.
The dumping by illegal recyclers and the presence of an informal settlement led to the Tshwane metro receiving many complaints from residents, and the problem only seemed to worsen over time.
In July, the metro sent in a team to clear the dump and relocate the informal settlers.
The R84 000 effort included the use of diggers and other machinery.
On Tuesday, the team cleared the rubbish the heavy machinery left behind.
Together, the team was able to remove a total of 770 bags of litter from the site.
Ward councillor Cindy Bilson said she is pleased with the results but feels that a little more work is needed to completely clear the area.
“I want to thank the several residents in ward 69 that made financial contributions to pay for labour for today.
“We will need to do this again and I hope then to see more volunteers from ward 69,” she said.
Tarryn Johnston and her team from Hennops Revival continued their clean-up at Southdowns where there was a lot of debris and fallen trees as a result of flooding.
According to Johnston, the area is completely underwater when the river floods and has therefore suffered extensive damage over the years.
A total of 268 bags of waste and three upturned trees were removed.
Johnston is particularly grateful for Southdown Homeowners for their continued support of their efforts to keep the part of their river neat and tidy.
The Hennops River has been subject to frequent dumping and pollution which puts water security at risk.
It also harms the local biodiversity.
Johnston said she hopes to encourage active citizenry by making people aware of the problems the river is facing as well as getting them involved in the solution.
