Senior citizens celebrate Women’s Month in Mamelodi East
“Celebrating Women’s Day in August month must come to an end - women need to be loved and appreciated every day.”
Elderly and young women came in their numbers to celebrate Women’s Month at the SOS children’s village in Mamelodi East on Wednesday.
Sibongile Zwane from Love Life said the event was to sit down together and discuss social issues.
The event was mostly attended by elderly people from different senior citizens clubs in Mamelodi and the theme for the event involved wearing bright head scarves.
“The event is about discussing social issues that women are facing every day, but mostly to honour women,” said Zwane.
She said the objectives were to share and come up with solutions to social problems.
A line-up of speakers came to empower women, especially on their safety and how to run businesses.
Zwane said the women were empowering and honouring each other, “to show elderly people that we love and most importantly to pamper them”.
“Women also got an opportunity to share their experiences and talk about their problems and come up with the solution and help one another.”
She said they have invited women from different departments to come and talk to women on social issues.
“Women have a lot of issues and discussing these with each other helps a lot and the load on their shoulders becomes lighter.”
Other issues that were discussed were living a healthy lifestyle and the safety of elderly people.
“Women deserve to be loved every day and treated nicely throughout the year.”
Businesswomen, social workers, psychologists and staff nurses from Stanza Bopape clinic also attended.
The event ended with the elderly women having lunch together and singing gospel music.
