Looking for senior milk tart champ in Pretoria east

The retirement home where the winner resides will receive a cash prize of R1 500 during a high tea the following day.

Solidarity Helping Hand in the east has launched a competition to find a retirement home that can deliver the finest milk tart baker.

Solidarity regional organiser Isabel Böning said the competition is specifically for those senior citizens who want to keep the nostalgia and tradition of their winning milk tart alive.

“The participating retirement homes must organise an internal baking competition before September 15 to determine five finalists who will advance to the top-notch milk tart competition.

“A panel of food connoisseurs will visit the respective homes on October 5 in search of the best milk tart,” she said.

Solidarity media liaison officer Phillip Bruwer said the winner will be announced on October 6.

“The retirement home where the winner resides will receive a cash prize of R1 500 during a high tea the following day.

“On October 14, the winner and Helping Hand will spoil a local kindergarten with milk tarts baked according to the winning recipe while sharing its history and secret with the youngsters.”

Böning said the project will bring senior citizens and children together.

“We want to create an opportunity for senior citizens and youngsters to forge bonds over something delicious.”

Bruwer said entries close at noon on September 15.

“The entry fee for each finalist is R50.
