Relocation of Akasia library well underway

The library is expected to be fully operational soon.

The Tshwane metro has resumed proceedings to relocate the Akasia library to a newly built site after it was put on hold due to a disagreement between the main contractor and government entities involved.

According to Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba, the relocation of the Akasia library to the site at 207/303 Reginald Avenue was proceeding well with the first phase of the study area ready to be opened to the public.

“The building of this long-awaited public service facility comes after the metro stopped the lease of the old facility from a private entity.”

Ward 4 councillor Ridge Petersen previously told Rekord that said the delays in completing the library’s relocation and refurbishment were reportedly due to an impasse at the site between the main contractor, Gauteng infrastructure development department, and the Gauteng sports, arts, culture and recreation department.

The library was set to be handed over on May 30, 2021; however, after inspection, it was determined that there was an outstanding “snag list” that needed to be completed.

Petersen explained that a snag list referred to a list of small things which needed to be done before a building or project was finished.

In this case it included the finalisation of the paving, general cleaning of the outside area, addressing minor internal and external defects, a pedestrian crossing and for the main contractor to provide proof of a fully paid utility bill before leaving the site and submitting a completion file.

The contract for the project was awarded at over R18-million and will accommodate children, youths and adults with diverse personal and educational interests.

Selby highlighted that one of the key benefits for the community of Akasia is that they will no longer have to travel far to access a community library.

“The facility can also be used as a place to study without interruptions.

“The library is expected to be fully operational soon and further information will be communicated once available.”

He added that the metro will strive to monitor the progress of all facilities under refurbishment.

“We appreciate the patience exercised by the community of Akasia for the duration of this project.”
