Mams police raid hostel blocks

“We will continue holding these surprise raids until we have cleaned up all the Mamelodi and Kingsley hostel blocks.”

Police arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of drugs and selling alcohol without a licence at the Mamelodi hostel blocks.

The man was arrested during a crime prevention raid by the Mamelodi West police station on Monday, according to police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso.

He said the raid was held after recent stabbings in which two people were killed.

“This was not the only complaint we received about the hostel blocks though.”

The raid was held at Mamelodi hostel section P.

“We will continue holding these surprise raids until we have cleaned up all the Mamelodi and Kingsley hostel blocks.”.

In the most recent knife stabbing incident, an elder brother and two friends stabbed a man multiple times at the hostel in revenge for a brother’s death.

The incident occurred at the temporary residential units at Kingsley hostel on July 30.

Mamelodi police arrest a 30-year-old susupect in possession of drugs.

It was alleged that two friends were having drinks together when they got into an argument and one pulled out a knife and stabbed the other to death.

The victim was stabbed several times in the upper body and died on the scene.

Eyewitnesses claimed the brother and his two friends found the suspect in the vicinity of the first stabbing.

He said the police have arrested two people (aged 27 and 34) while the third was on the run.

A Kingsley hostel resident, Alfred Phogole, said since the units were illegally occupied, “there are fights and loud all-night music every night”.

He said the hostel committee raised the issue with the Tshwane metro, but nothing has been done to resolve the situation.

The temporary units at the hostel were supposed to be allocated to hostel dwellers by the end of June 2020 to prevent the overcrowding that spread the Covid-19 virus.

He said this is not the first stabbing at the units.

The suspects briefly appeared in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on charges of murder and are still in police custody.
