Slight relief for motorists at the pump

Motorists can expect a slight relief as both grades of petrol were expected to drop by R2.35 per litre from Wednesday, September 7.

The price of diesel is set to drop by 77 and 87 cents per litre at the same time.

Despite recent the rand’s weakness against the US dollar, the average exchange rate against the US currency is still favourable.

The Automobile Association (AA) welcomed the decrease and said it would provide some relief to motorists. However, they said the prices are still much higher compared to R21.84/l May pricing.

“It is also way off the January pricing of R19.61/l,” the AA noted.

Despite this, the association said any decrease in fuel prices was good news.

The AA once again called on the government to urgently initiate a transparent review of the fuel price to seek answers.

They said scrapping the general fuel levy (GFL) was not the solution.

“We note the calls by those who say this is a way of reducing the fuel price but in our view, this will not solve the problem. It will simply force the government to find alternative ways to collect the revenue generated by this tax. Instead, the structure and composition of the fuel price must be considered, along with a deeper interrogation of how the government currently allocates its funds,” the AA noted.
