‘Hennops most polluted river in the country’

Hennops carries massive volumes of plastic into the crocodile and Limpopo Rivers

The Hennops River is the most polluted river in the country, a water rights activist has claimed.

“It carries massive volumes of plastic into the Crocodile and Limpopo rivers, permanently contaminating our country,” said Willem Snyman.

Snyman is a determined activist who founded an NPO called Fountain River Environmental Sanctuary Hennops (Fresh).

This NPO is taking a problem-solving approach to the pollution in the river by identifying some of the main contributors to the pollution.

Snyman said he and his organisation have been working in the wetlands for about three years as Fresh has been attracting volunteers from different companies.

In their effort to curb pollution and keep plastic away, they created litter traps.

“To hold back the plastic deluge, the first line of defence for these rivers lies near the source. We can stop much of the plastic waste right here. The litter traps we installed caught and removed tonnes of plastics from the water over the past three years,” Snyman said.
