Learners living with disability prepared for life beyond school

On Tuesday, learners from Tshegofatsong Special School together with disabled learners in and around Mamelodi attended a Workplace Readiness programme organised by industry experts to prepare them for life beyond school.

The programme was organised by Disability Connect together with its sponsor Sun International in which topics that were covered included how to handle a job interview, draft a winning CV and university access for students with disabilities.

Chris Buchanan from Disability Connect said, “you are not your disability, you are your own person”.

He said the important thing about learners with disability is to make them understand that the workplace has opportunities for them.

“Disability Workplace Readiness events came to Tshegofatsong Special School with Sun International as the corporate partner of the day,” said Buchanan.

“While the benefits of hiring persons with disabilities may be widely acknowledged, demystifying, and highlighting the largely marginalised disability sector, as well as the sourcing and accessing of relevant skills within this sector remains a challenge.

“Industry experts shared and taught learners how to prepare for life beyond school and the topics included how to handle a job interview, draft a winning CV and university access for students with disabilities,” he said.

He further said Sun International spoke to the learners about future opportunities for work in the gaming, hospitality and entertainment sectors.

Learners also gained an insight into Sun International’s contributions and commitment to the economy, communities and the environment.

School principal Milton Ngobeni said: “We are proud to be associated with Disability Connect, who visited our school today with their sponsor Sun International”.

He said the school is running a job placement programme for the learners and Disability Connect wanted to be part of it when they were able to assist them get employment after living the school.

“This is the first time we are working with the company and they have already helped our learners prepare CVs and interviews ,” said Ngobeni.
