Metro residents warned of EPWP and RDP scams
“I would like to make it unreservedly clear to our residents that EPWP applications and work contracts are not for sale.”
The Tshwane metro has warned against extended public works programme (EPWP) and RDP home placement scams meant to swindle residents out of their money.
“We have learned that some residents have been charged as much as R600 to secure EPWP contracts around Soshanguve,” said Tshwane mayor Randall Williams.
Williams said that the people asking residents to pay were criminals because EPWP contracts were not for sale.
He said that EPWP work contracts are awarded by lottery to eligible residents between the ages of 18 and 60 with a valid ID and proof of residence free of charge.
The EPWP provides selected candidates with short-term vocational job opportunities around the metro and has employed thousands since its start.
Registration forms are available at the EPWP division, office GO3, Church Square, Ou Raadsaal Building and Pretoria CBD from Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:00. All the candidates’ identification documents must be attached to the registration form.
In addition to the EPWP fraud, the metro said that an unknown man pretending to be a government official has asked residents to bring their RDP applications to him.
A “Mr Tau” through what the metro calls a “rogue” social media post has called on residents interested in applying for RDPs to contact him.
Williams said that this “Mr Tau” was not the MMC for Human Settlements Abel Tau.
He encouraged residents not to engage in any dealings through this social media post with “Mr Tau”.
Residents with any information related to incidents such as these were urged to report the matter to the relevant authorities.
