ANC Ga-Rankuwa branch chair murdered
ANC ward 30 chairperson Collen Mpyana was shot dead on Sunday, September 11.
Ga-Rankuwa police have opened a case of murder following a fatal shooting of the 47-year-old ANC ward 30 chairperson Collen Mpyana.
The police received a complaint about a shooting on Sunday, September 11 in Ga-Rankuwa zone 4 and rushed to the scene, according to Ga-Rankuwa police communications officer Shimi Tsheole.
“It is alleged that the victim was shot while inside his VW Golf GTI. No arrests have been made yet,” he said.
Tsheole said the motive for the shooting is not yet known because the investigation is still in its early stages.
He added that the docket was handed to a provincial task team for further investigation.
ANC ward 30 councillor Violet Phalwane said the family of the slain chairman was distraught over the passing of its beloved family member.
Phalwane said the family and ANC were left wondering whether he was taken out by political rivals or by criminals who wanted to take his belongings.
“We just assumed that it was an attempted hijacking because he bought his car last week,” she said.
The councillor said Mpyana did not get the chance to even drive the car he recently bought.
“This is very painful. The family is going through a traumatic experience. They even appointed me to speak on their behalf,” she said.
She said she was very close to the deceased, and his death left a lot of hearts broken.
“They took his life. We didn’t expect him to lose his life like this because he’s been in politics for many years and he was still young with a lot to prove,” she said.
She believes that this could be a political-related murder because of the number of years he served as a politician.
“He was a humble man and he was harmless,” she added.
She said they lost an important member of the community who was serving on a number of boards around the community.
“He was a member of various boards. He was even dealing with the issue of substance abuse within our community,” she said.
