Man arrested with ‘unlicensed gun, ammunition’ in CBD denied bail
The incident took place on September 9 on the corner of Struben and Lillian Ngoyi streets in the CBD.
The Pretoria man arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at the weekend has been denied bail.
Pretoria Central SAPS corporate communications officer Constable Thabang Nkhumise confirmed that the suspect appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on September 12.
“The presiding officer denied the accused bail,” he said.
He said Pretoria Central police officers arrested the 22-year-old on September 9, at the corner of Struben and Lillian Ngoyi streets in the CBD.
“The police, conducting stop-and-search operations in the area, came across two suspicious-looking young men who seemed to be trying to avoid the authorities,” he said.
When the police proceeded to engage the pair, they took off running.
He said one man was arrested following a foot chase, while the other evaded capture.
He said an unregistered pistol, two magazines and 27 live rounds of ammunition were found in the arrested man’s possession.
“He was promptly arrested,” he said.
He said the man has no prior convictions and was remanded in custody to face his charges at a later stage.
Nkhumise also said the second suspect remained on the loose, however, investigations are ongoing.
The public was urged to call in and report any information related to this case.
Nkhumise further asked the public to be aware of their surroundings at all times and avoid being alone in high-risk areas where they can fall victim to crimes.
“Avoid walking in isolated locations to prevent falling victim to common robberies and other related crimes,” said Nkhumise.
