Tuks students donate food to Mamelodi centre
The centre received non-perishable food, 25 pairs of school shoes, five blankets, 20 pairs of casual shoes, 12 running shoes, tennis rackets, school uniforms, and netball and soccer kits that the students collected to help the Mamelodi community.
The Tuks community development department recently donated food, books and clothes to Thandanani Drop Inn centre in Mamelodi.
The centre received non-perishable food, clothes – school uniforms, 25 pairs of school shoes, 20 pairs of casual shoes, 12 running shoes, five blankets, tennis rackets and netball and soccer kits that the students collected to help the Mamelodi community.
Kate Kekana of the centre said the generous donations came at the right time because they deal with a lot of children from disadvantaged families.
The students also donated a photocopy machine to the centre, which is in a good condition and will help with the daily admin work.
Kekana said the beneficiaries were excited and wouldn’t stop giving thanks to the donors and the service provider.
Last Tuesday, the centre hosted a drug awareness campaign in the community development department to make students aware of the dangers of using drugs.
Kekana said the motivational talk focused on ideal goals and academics. Students were told to also open up if they are troubled instead of bottling things up, as most would resort to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain.
“Coordinators from the centre shared their experiences assisting the community as well as success stories,” said Kekana.
Ambassadors of the Thandanani Narcotics Anonymous programme held talks with the Tuks students about their experiences and how they managed to turn their lives around for the better.
“Narcotics Anonymous programme helps drug addicts and users to reclaim their lives as well as reunites the homeless with their loved ones,” Kekana said.
Thandanani centre is situated in Mamelodi East section SNS and was founded in 2011.
