Dube police reprimand learners for bullying, search them for weapons
Learners at Holy Trinity Secondary School were reprimanded for bullying and advised against bringing weapons to school.
The Dube police crime prevention unit has reprimanded learners at Holy Trinity secondary school for bullying at the Winterveld school.
The unit and its victim empowerment office partnered with the CPF Siyabangena patrollers (CPFSP) to search learners for weapons as the school had a challenge of bullying.
Police communication officer Tembi Nowathe said 10 CPFSPs from Dube SAPS made a huge impact at the school searching learners.
She said teachers were happy because three classes of 135 learners were reprimanded for bullying and advised not to bring dangerous weapons to school.
Nowathe said the school has been battling bullying recently but wasn’t able to deal with it completely.
She added that the school reported incidents of bullying to affected parents, but some hardly attended to the problem concerning their children’s behaviour.
“The school had some challenges with the learners this past Monday so they called us to warn them not to bring dangerous weapons to the school,” she said.
Nowathe added that some parents don’t even come to the school to talk about the issues that the school was facing and that’s where the police came in.
She said the learners reacted well to the police visit and promised to stay away from trouble.
“It’s not going to be easy because you know how learners are, but we just keep trying to talk to them hoping that things change,” she said.
She said they have introduced ways and safety measures to prevent crime involving learners.
“We get them to participate in sports to ensure that they are always occupied and not involved in dangerous activities,” she added.
She said learners usually do wrong things when they are not occupied and have free time on their hands.
According to Nowathe, five years ago, the station took the learners on a prison tour to show them what prison looks like and how dangerous it is.
Besides bullying, the school had other challenges earlier this year. The school governing body shut down the school in May demanding more teachers, tablets, chairs, tables and classrooms.
