Anthony Valaskatzis has a bright musical future
Valaskatzi says Elvis Presley is one of his biggest influences.
Anthony Valaskatzis, a 19-year-old singer and songwriter from Centurion, has shown that he has more than enough talent and has a bright future in the music industry.
Valaskatzis’ passion for music has seen him win numerous awards and has even taken him overseas.
He was one of the top finalists for Rand Show Talent and Runner up in Die Stem.
Valaskatzis was given the chance to travel to the USA when he was chosen to take part in the USA in the South African Talent Championship (SATCH). He recently talked to Rekord about his music.
When did you first discover your love for music?
My love for music started at a very early age, I loved the sound and the beat. Listening to music took to me to different places in the world.
I was very young when I started playing a guitar and composing my own songs.
I believe I was born with a passion for music!
Which artists did you listen to growing up?
Justin Bieber, he was a huge inspiration for me. I always wanted to be like him. I loved his music and his style and everything was amazing about him.
I will never forget watching his live show in Dubai – The Purpose tour.
Later in my life I listened a lot to Elvis Presley. I look up to him and can relate to his music. I also love singing his songs and must admit I am really good at doing an Elvis show.
What genre of music do you like the most, and which genres do you sing?
I love all genres and can sing it all: country, pop, rock, contemporary, gospel, upbeat Afrikaans, Disney, animation and ballads.
What are some of your earliest memories of music or singing?
I remember picking up the guitar and playing “by my ouma and oupa se dam at Kromdraai” – Lankgewag, a special song that I wrote for my Oupa.
I can also remember the first time I got on to a stage, it felt like home. I felt safe… it felt like I belonged!
What themes are most present in your song writing?
It is mostly about love, heartbreak and my connection with God.
What is your ultimate goal for your music career?
I want to help people through my music and change their point of view of what or who they are.
I want to help them with issues they are going through. I know a lot of people, young or old can relate to the music I write, it can help them cope with what they are going through.
What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
Being the runner up in Die Stem singing competition and especially all the amazing prizes that could help me further my career. This competition was over a period of seven weeks. We sang all types of genres, something that I really enjoyed. A lot of dedication and hard work were put into this competition but it was worth it.
What do you enjoy most about performing and singing?
I enjoy seeing the people interact with the music and I enjoy seeing them happy and getting emotional while listening to the songs. It really shows me that I can change people’s perspectives through my songs.
