Hennops activist nominated for environmental award
"Waiting for someone else to fix the problem will not ever work. Thus I thought I’ll do what I can with what I have."
Hennops Revival founder Tarryn Johnston has been named a finalist for the Enviropaedia eco-logic award.
Johnston said she was very happy about the nomination, adding that it was made extra special because this year’s awards will be attended in person as opposed to the previous ones.
“It’s extra exciting this year because all the previous ones have been online and for it being an in-person event makes a huge difference.
“Myself and Hennops Revival have been selected as finalists in two categories,” she said.

Johnston further said she felt the need to stand up and start making a difference in her community by trying to clean up the Hennops River.
“Clearly, waiting for someone else to fix the problem will not ever work. Thus I thought I’ll do what I can with what I have – which, as a single mom, wasn’t much – I have hands and a voice and I have used them to create more awareness around a longstanding issue in my hometown.”
She thanked members of the community for the support they have given her, adding that all of the work wouldn’t have been possible without them.
Johnston also thanked her followers for offering her plane tickets and accommodation to attend the award ceremony.

“I want to thank members of the community who contributed towards my flights to and from Cape Town. It is amazing to have such a supportive following and that they see the value in the work that we are doing in our community.
“And special acknowledgement to my team of river warriors #hennopsheroes, all our partners, donors, sponsors, supporters and volunteers without whom we would not be where we are today.”
She also thanked the City of Tshwane and the private sector and “the people whose hearts we speak to by caring for our precious planet”.
The awards will be held in Cape Town on September 22 and televised, for the first time, on September 30 on the People’s Weather channel.
