Month-long water leak leaves resident hopeless

The team found two water leaks, namely a water leak on the sidewalk and a reoccurring water leak on the isolation valve before the water meter.

A Theresapark resident has been pulling her hair out because the Tshwane metro still hasn’t repaired a month-old water leak in her front yard.

Naledi Swartland reported a water leak which she claims was caused by municipal employers on August 13.

“Municipal workers were working in front of the yard and a few days later, we noticed a leak. We reported the matter but nothing was done.

“I have called and sent multiple emails asking for assistance even from our ward councillor, but to no avail.”

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the metro dispatched a maintenance team after the matter was brought to its attention.

The team found two water leaks, namely a water leak on the sidewalk and a reoccurring water leak on the isolation valve before the water meter.

“Only the sidewalk leak was resolved on September 12. The other leak should be resolved by the end of the week as we need to externally source the relevant fitting.

“It should be noted that a fibre cable was damaged while repairing the sidewalk leak. As a result, our team did not entirely complete the backfilling and clearing process. This is to allow the fibre contractor easy access to the damaged cables.”

The incomplete backfilling and clearing by the metro has rubbed salt into the month-old wound as Swartland can’t park

“I can’t park my car in my yard because of the trench and I have to park elsewhere. This is not acceptable.”

Ward 98 councillor Sipho Mtakati said her job was to escalate issues to the relevant departs and to ask for follow-ups on the work done.

“I have been in contact with the resident and I have sent messages to the relevant departments but I do not have the mandate to tell municipal employees to resolve these issues.

“I sometimes wish that I could do these repairs myself but I am not qualified to do so because all I want is for residents’ complaints to be resolved swiftly.”
