Akasia police raise awareness of domestic violence
Thiba discouraged victims from withdrawing cases but instead allow the law to take its course.

Akasia police joined hands with Holy Cross and the people against abuse NGO to create awareness of gender-based violence and how the police can help.
Sergeant Thiba of the domestic violence office urged locals to use the trauma centre at the police station, which aims to give first-hand assistance to victims of abuse and explained the procedures for opening a case.
– Go to the police station and tell the officer that you want to open a case of domestic violence
– The officer will take you to the victim empowerment centre where you will be interviewed in privacy
– First-line counselling will be offered by a designated social worker at the centre
– A case will then be registered and a case number later be sent by SMS
– The suspect will be arrested depending on the merits of the case as police are not limited to arrest only and there are other ways to ensure the suspect’s appearance in court.
– The court will then decide on the case upon presentation of evidence before it.
Thiba discouraged victims from withdrawing cases but instead allow the law to take its course.
“Many victims are said to have cancelled the cases in exchange for money or whatever the perpetrators may promise them.”
Victims of domestic violence are encouraged to report these cases to the police for the culprits to be brought to book.
