Pretoria woman thankful for cops’ help
“They were and are truly my angels. They took care of me, calmed me down and sorted out everything for me,” she says.
A Pretoria woman was running her normal daily errands when she suddenly lost control of her vehicle after her tyre burst.
As Alona Ben-Basat swerved left and right to avoid a major accident on the busy Solomon Mahlangu Road, close to the airforce base Waterkloof the car suddenly came to a stop.
“As I was swerving, it seemed my vehicle would never stop… I was sure in those seconds that passed that I would cause a major accident with multiple vehicles.”
Still frozen in the moment, unsure what to do next, her “angels” came to the rescue.
Captain I Hoosen and Captain JK Malange had seen what had happened so instead of driving on to their meeting, turned back to check on Ben-Basat.
“Regrettably nowadays we find that when an incident is not in their designated police area, officers continue driving on… they don’t want to get involved.”
But these two took the time to calm Ben-Basat down, then went beyond their call of duty to call her friend to tell her what had happened, and check if she needed an ambulance.
They replaced the burst tyre with her spare tyre but realised it was flat so Malange took both tyres as well as Ben-Basat to a nearby tyre fitment centre while Hoosen remained at the scene to look after the vehicle.
“They were and are truly my angels. They took care of me, calmed me down and sorted out everything for me,” said Ben-Basat.
Malange explained everything to the staff at the centre and ensured Ben-Basat got the service she needed.
Back at the scene, the officers fitted the tyre, and followed Ben-Basat to a vehicle centre to ensure her car was not damaged.
“They did not have to do any of this, but they remained true to the motto of Protect and Serve. Captain Hoosen with his partner even called me a week later to see how I was,” said Ben-Basat.
“I would have been lost without them.”
