School burglar sentenced to three years imprisonment
Gregory Navhinga was found in possession of calculators and other stationery stolen from Senthibele High School in Soshanguve Block P in July 2020.
The Soshanguve magistrate’s court has heeded the call by a school governing bodies (SGB) in Soshanguve to ensure school burglars are punished.
Three weeks ago, the SGBs told the police that people caught breaking the law often ended up roaming the streets as if nothing had happened.
Last week, the court sentenced Gregory Navhinga to three years imprisonment for burglary.
In July 2020, Navhinga was arrested at Senthibele high school in Soshanguve Block P after community members spotted him around 21:00 scaling a fence. He was carrying a black container stolen from the school, according to Rietgat police communication officer Captain Stephan Maluleke.
“Community members then screamed and the accused jumped back into the school premises where he hid behind a fridge in the administration block.”
He said the police responded swiftly and found Navhinga in possession of stolen calculators, an alarm keyboard, computer speakers and stationery.
Acting Rietgat police station commander Colonel William Molamudi welcomed the three-year jail sentence handed down to Navhinga.
He praised the investigating officer Sergeant Puleng Moejane for her solid work.
“The sergeant never lost focus but did her job to the letter, and we applaud her for that,” he said.
Molamudi praised the community for heeding the call to protect public property including schools.
“We are very grateful to the community for taking ownership of the school and cooperating with the police and not taking the law into their own hands by resorting to vigilantism despite ample time they had,” he said.
The police condemned the burglaries at schools and vowed to make sure that perpetrators are brought to book.
