Daweti hand Sundowns ladies a perfect start to title defence

Despite taking maximum points in the opening match of the competition, Chuene Morifi believes there is room for improvement after a highly physical encounter.

Women’s CAF Champions League defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies began their title defence with a 2-1 victory over Bayelsa Queens FC on Monday, October 31.

Two goals from Lelona Daweti were enough to seal the much-needed three points for Sundowns in Group B.

Daweti didn’t only win her club the match but registered the club and her name in the history books by becoming the first player to score a brace in the history of the competition.

Daweti told the club’s website that she was pleased with her work rate in the first match and praised the collective effort of the team to win the game.

“I am very happy with the way we played against our opponents. We planned to dominate possession and finish off our chances and we did just that,” she said.

She added that scoring a brace left her happy but her overall excitement lies in the fact that they grabbed maximum points in what she described as a perfect way to start the competition.

Despite taking maximum points in the opening match of the competition, Chuene Morifi believes there is room for improvement after a highly physical encounter.

“That was a very tough game for us because Queens are a top side in Nigeria who possess several players from the national team,” she said.

She added that it was a bit difficult for them in the early period of the game but they managed to settle in and take control of the game.

“We converted our chances when they came and we are pleased with the outcome of the fixture. We are eagerly looking forward to the next game,” she said.

Daweti might’ve won the game and captured the headlines but midfielder Thalea Smidt bossed the midfield and showed class as she completed 51 successful passes in the game.

The Brazilian ladies return to action again on Thursday, November 3 against Wadi Degla FC.
