Metro, Miss Earth SA donate trees to combat climate change

The MMC also expressed gratefulness toward Miss Earth SA for joining one of the metro’s numerous green initiatives.

Miss Earth SA and the Tshwane metro recently teamed up to donate trees to a care centre in Pretoria West and planted them to combat environmental woes.

Manger Marine, which looks after the elderly and disabled on 31 Van Der Hoff Rd, was the lucky recipient of the gift.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management, Katlego Mathebe, and current Miss Earth SA, Ziphozethu Sithole, attended the greening initiative this past weekend. Mathebe says that various studies indicate that Gauteng’s temperature is rising at double the rates of global temperatures.

“This is owing to global temperature trends and the heat island effect that is experienced in an incredibly urbanised province. Thus making greening our environment an absolute necessity,” said Mathebe.

The Miss Earth SA pageant started in 2001 to create awareness of sustainable development, the environment, wildlife and conservation, whilst being a leadership programme to empower young women.

“Trees help block the sun from warming up city surfaces, reduce the carbon footprint and beautify the surrounding areas,” Mathebe continues.

The MMC also thanked Miss Earth SA for joining one of the metro’s numerous green initiatives.

“Our joint efforts with Miss Earth SA will continue to educate communities on the need to overcome the effects of climate change. A sustainable environment is possible if we show our commitment to the environment,” Mathebe concluded.

The metro recently donated farming equipment and additional trees to a hospice in Atteridgeville to commemorate World Food Day on October 16.

The project was in conjunction with the social development and community services department.

Residents are encouraged to contact the metro to find out which of the many metro greening initiatives they would be interested in.
