Metro reminds Marabastad beneficiaries to pay their deposits

No date on when the application processes for phase 2 will begin has been communicated, though the metro states it will be revealed in due course.

Approved beneficiaries of the Marabastad housing project are reminded to pay their deposits ASAP to ensure their new home is secured.

This announcement comes after acting MMC for human settlements, Cllr Peggy de Bruin released a statement on October 31.

The metro had conducted a viewing session at the nearly complete project this past October to give the 124 approved beneficiaries a chance to view their new homes for the first time.

“Beneficiaries are reminded that the last date for payment is November 5, failing which, applicants will forfeit their space,” said De Bruin.

De Bruin is also the MMC for social development and community services.

The quotations were sent out by Housing Company Tshwane (HCT), a metro-owned social housing entity that assisted in the project’s execution.

A total of 691 beneficiaries have been approved for placement in the housing project for its first phase. The project is intended to give the residents easy access to the CBD and all the economic amenities and opportunities available while providing affordable housing.

“The multimillion-rand housing project consists of 1 200 units and covers residents of Tshwane who do not qualify for government subsidy housing or earn enough to qualify for a home loan (between R1 500-R15 000 a month)” De Bruin said.

Since September last year, 6 000 people had applied for units in the housing project but only 800 were shortlisted and further vetting reduced this number to the current 691 that were approved this year.

The 1 200-unit multimillion-rand mixed complex is one of several housing projects that the metro has budgeted for in the 2022/23 calendar year, totalling approximately R800-million.

The Department of Human Settlements stated earlier this year that these efforts are being made to help alleviate the high demand for rental accommodation in Tshwane.

No date has been communicated yet for when the application process for phase 2 will begin though the metro states this will be revealed in due course.

“The City of Tshwane is looking forward to opening the doors to all approved beneficiaries. This is only the first phase and HCT will announce when the application process for phase 2 gets underway,” De Bruin concluded.
