Motorists warned to avoid parking in remote areas

Mamelodi police warn motorists to avoid parking in remote areas day or night.

The Mamelodi police have issued a stern warning to local motorists to avoid parking in remote areas.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the warning came as the police investigated rape and attempted murder cases recently.

He said recently a couple reported that they were attacked while sitting in a car in a remote area.

“The couple was attacked by a group of people at gunpoint, the female was raped, valuables taken and even shots were also fired into the car,” said Maheso.

He urged motorists to be extra vigilant and alert as more attacks, hijackings, rapes and robberies at such places were reported.

He pleaded with motorists to avoid such remote places where couples preferred to park and chill especially during the festive season.

He said there had been several incidents in which couples were targeted and robbed while parked in remote places during the night.

Motorists are advised to avoid parking vehicles in the mountains, community parks, sports grounds and HM Pitje stadium.

Maheso further advised the public to walk in groups and avoid isolated areas in the mornings and afternoons to avoid becoming the next victims.

“Residents must walk in groups before dawn and after dusk to safeguard themselves from robbers lurking in the dark… avoid falling victim to criminals, walk in groups,” he said.

Footpaths through the bushes and unlit areas are hotspots for criminal activity and should be avoided at all costs, even if it means you have to take a bit longer to get home to your loved ones.

“Take our warning very seriously and walk in groups of at least five to be safe.”

He added that the police have increased visibility “but residents need to help by taking extra precaution to ensure they are not easy prey”.

“The police would continue to do everything possible to keep civilians safe but prevention is always better than cure,” he said.

Safety tips to avoid becoming the next victim:

– Avoid drinking in public.

– Do not just accept help from suspect persons, always be vigilant.

– Reduce theft out of motor vehicle by removing attractive objects inside the car.

– Avoid parking at remote places.

He advised residents and motorists to report any criminal or suspicious activity to the police on 08600 10111.
