Hazeldean Parkrun celebrated its 100th run last weekend and decided to commemorate its first event director, the late Peter Wilgenbus, by planting a tree in his honour. Organisers said there are usually 300 people taking part every weekend after the venue started hosting the run in 2019. Wilgenbus was a passionate runner and gave his time to help with the organisation and presenting the event, which takes place every Saturday. The tree planting ushers in a new initiative in which they expressed the hope that every person will plant a tree this year.
With potholes being ever more present on our roads, a local councillor in his capacity as constituency chair for Centurion gathered a team of volunteers around him and they embarked on fixing potholes around the area. Five potholes were fixed (at an average cost of around R2 000 to R3 000 each) before rain interrupted the campaign. Residents say they can hardly believe what they are seeing, with councillors pitching in and actively helping to fix potholes.
With the recent rains, the Hennops river once again claimed the life of a man. The man’s friend found his body near Sierra Road, after warning him not to go into the river as the stream was strong and it was deep. They were purportedly trying to retrieve golf balls from the stream. The men collect these golf balls and sell them back to golfers using the nearby golf course.
The man found drowned in the Hennops on Friday was an enthusiastic member of the NGO that cleans the river. Founder of Hennops Revival Tarryn Johnston told Rekord that he was a well-known loved member of the team with a bubbly personality. The team was due to start the New Year’s work on January 4, and he will be sorely missed, she said. The police have opened an inquest into his death.
Pretoria has many artists and musicians. You may not have heard of many of them yet, but this year will certainly bring many of their names to the fore as they step onto the stages all around our city. Fresh young artists like Alter Ego, Rayne, the brothers Kirsten and Kyle Schlebusch who take to the stage under the name Droomsindroom, the Aitsa winner rock violinist Scheppel and breathtaking winner of Die Kontrak 2022, Samantha Leonard, will bring many a musical moment to Pretoria audiences.
Others set to make their mark on local and national stages include Dodo Nyoka and the male-female duo Reën, who last year released their debut single.
