Mams seniors’ team needs new players

Elderly people in Mamelodi who love to play soccer or wants to showcase their dribbling skills are invited to join a senior citizens' soccer club.

The elderly in Mamelodi who wish to play soccer or showcase their dribbling skills are invited to join a senior citizens’ soccer club, Shonisani.

The team of gogos was founded in 2010 after the World Cup in South Africa and now is now looking to recruit new players to join on February 13.

“We are looking for new blood to come and join us,” said club founder, Sarah Shonisani adding that the team would train at Muckleneuk sports grounds on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 08:00 to 09:30.

The club is for members people aged 35 and above but especially elderly women and men.

“Many senior citizens complain about aching joints and suffer a lot from chronic diseases,” she said.

She said before joining the club, many senior citizen visited hospitals and clinics frequently complaining about body pains, diabetes and high blood pressure and found that after a few months of joining, they felt healthier, stronger and happier.

“All the exercise helps the healing process and reduces the number of visits to the doctor,” she said.

Shonisani said she has never been admitted to hospital and her blood pressure has been stable since she started the club.

“I would sweat from doing very little activity. Now I feel healthier and stronger.”

She added that joining the team would also help the elderly ward off boredom sitting at home alone.

“This is an opportunity to meet new and old friends. The team will not only exercise three times a week, but will also play friendly matches against other elderly soccer teams from neighbouring townships,” she added.

“In a team sport, everybody depends on the others. You feel really needed because the team really doesn’t do well when it is a player short.”

She also appealed for sponsorship and donations “for the team to grow”.

She said the team needed training equipment such as balls and T-shirts.
