Lyttelton SAPS out to stop crime in its tracks

“We would like to remind the criminals that Centurion is not your playground,” say police.

On Wednesday, Lyttelton police officers arrested two suspects in possession of a stolen car and house-breaking equipment.

Later that day, two other suspects were arrested by undercover cops for possession of suspected mandrax tablets after the officers chased down a speeding erratic vehicle.

“We would like to remind criminals that Centurion is not your playground,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller

“There are dedicated police officials, private security and CPF members who are watching and waiting for you.”

At 09:00 on Wednesday, a suspicious vehicle was spotted lurking in the area of the Lyttelton shopping centre.

Tracker SA made further enquiries about the vehicle and it was established that it was used to commit a house-breaking on Tuesday in the Lyttelton area.

Lyttelton SAPS together with a dedicated team of crime-fighting members from local private security companies responded to the call.

“A member of Tracker was able to follow the vehicle with two occupants inside and relay his position to the responding members. The suspects were cornered on Cantonment Avenue, where the suspects were apprehended,” said Miller.

Police established that the vehicle was stolen during a house-breaking in the Lyttelton area in February. Inside the vehicle, police found a backpack containing tools commonly used to forcefully gain access to houses.

Miller said that the suspects will face charges relating to possession of suspected stolen property, possession of house-breaking implements, and house-breaking.

He said Lyttelton detective services would try to establish if the suspects could be linked to other crimes in the area.

Later that day at around 15:00, police were on a routine patrol on the N1 freeway when they noticed a motor vehicle driving at high speed and weaving in and out of traffic.

The SAPS officers followed the vehicle as it continued to drive in a reckless manner. The police were able to stop the vehicle.

“When the occupants were questioned, it became clear to the police members that the vehicle was transporting a large quantity of suspected mandrax tablets.”

Two suspects will face charges of possession of drugs as well as drug trafficking.

Lyttelton station commander Brigadier T P Matlala said, “This is a substantial amount of narcotics that have been intercepted but it is a drop in the ocean of what is out there on the streets”.

“We will not tolerate any form of drug trafficking or dealing in our community and will do our utmost to ensure that all drug offences registered at the police station are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
