Crime stats: Several Pta police stations in top 30 plagued by serious crime
Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Silverton, Bronkhorstspruit, Tembisa, Pretoria West, Mamelodi, Akasia and Olievenhoutbosch police stations fall under top 30 plagued by serious crime.
The latest crime statistics released on Friday have shown an increase in crime in various parts of Pretoria.
Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Silverton and Bronkhorstspruit police stations made the top 30 police stations plagued by serious crime nationally.
Other local stations in the top 30 include Tembisa (murder), Pretoria West (robbery at non-residential premises), Mamelodi (common assault), Akasia (carjacking) and Olievenhoutbosch (Trio crime).
Police minister General Bheki Cele released the statistics which cover the period from October to December 2022.
In Gauteng, the likes of murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, rape, kidnappings, robberies at residential premises, burglaries at residential premises, cash in transit robberies, truck hijacking, theft from motor vehicles, serious crime, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and drug-related crimes have all soared.
A staggering 7 555 people were murdered nationwide.
In the three months, 3 144 people were killed with a firearm, 2 498 with weapons such as knives and other instruments.
Here are some of the latest statistics:
Brooklyn police station featured high in several crime categories:
– Common robberies rose to 155 cases from 69 in 2018.
– Record high other serious crimes of 679 from 667 in 2019.
– An increase of robberies at residential places to 42 from 23 in 2018.
– Theft out of motor vehicles declined to 139 from 256 in 2018.
– Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles declined to 173 from 251 in 2021.
Silverton:
– Two robberies of cash in transit crimes.
– Kidnappings rose to 28 from two in 2018.
– Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles was recorded at 76 cases.
Garsfontein:
– Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles was at 70.
Bronkhorstspruit:
– Two cases of sexual assault, the highest since 2018.
– 25 cases of robbery of non-residential places.
