Two trees topple in CBD during heavy storm

Both trees were cut up and removed from the streets to allow traffic to flow again.

Emergency services responded to two felled tree incidents each in Hatfield and Arcadia recently, one of which had fallen on two vehicles.

A large tree toppled on Monday afternoon on the corner of Jan Shoba and Burnett streets in Hatfield causing massive traffic delays though no pedestrians or motorists were injured.

“Along with the assistance of the Hatfield CID and the TMPD, we were able to cut the tree and remove it from the road,” said ward 56 councillor, Jarad Frimmel, who was part of the response to the scenes.

“Whilst attending to the tree in Jan Shoba Street, ward Councillor Leanne De Jager alerted the Brooklyn CPF of a second tree that had fallen over on the corner of Pretorius and Eastwood streets and that a bakkie was trapped underneath,” Frimmel continued.

Members of the Brooklyn CPF were dispatched to the scene where they discovered the tree had fallen damaging two vehicles, the bakkie still pinned underneath the tree.

Both drivers escaped the wreckage unharmed.

“Emergency services along with TMPD were called to the scene and along with the Brooklyn CPF Response team, we were able to cut the tree freeing the bakkie,” Frimmel said.

Because the tree fell during the peak hour, traffic backed up along Pretorious Street to Hatfield causing massive delays.

De Jager expressed her gratitude to Frimmel and all the parties that came out to help.
