Another 11 hours shutdown due to Rand Water’s vandalised infrastructure

“Tshwane residents are informed about an emergency shutdown of Rand Water supply to carry out repairs to its pipeline components that were vandalised yesterday evening.”

Tshwane residents will be facing another water shutdown in a space of a day after the metro announced an 11-hour shutdown for Rand Water’s emergency upgrade on Thursday.

In a statement issued by the metro on Thursday, the municipality attributes the impromptu shutdown to vandalism on Rand Water’s infrastructure that was affecting its pipeline to the booster station.

“Tshwane residents are informed about an emergency shutdown of Rand Water supply to carry out repairs to its pipeline components that were vandalised yesterday evening.”

“According to the water utility, the isolating valves for the meter that supplies the City of Ekurhuleni’s Edenpark were damaged, and as a result, 52% of pumping to Palmiet and 27% to Mapleton Booster pumping stations will be affected,” the municipality said in a statement.

The metro’s spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the utility anticipated it to take up to 10 hours to fully complete the repairs.

Mashigo further said the utility’s emergency repairs meant that certain reservoirs would be running out of water in the process.

According to the municipality, the following reservoirs are expected to be depleted: Klipriviersburg 1 & 2, Klipfontein 1 & 2. , Brakfontein, Haartebeeshoek, and Bronberge.

Furthermore, he warned that there were areas and reservoirs which were situated within the city that were facing the possibility of experiencing low pressure to no water at all for several hours.

Mashigo further emphasised the need for residents to continue using water sparingly and apologised for this unforeseen situation.

On Tuesday, the metro announced its planned shutdown due to the upgrade of a bulk water meter to the Mnandi reservoir.

This was after the water utility notified Tshwane of its urgent need to replace and upgrade a bulk water meter that supplies Mnandi Reservoir in Tshwane.

The following areas and reservoirs are likely to face dry taps:

– Mabopane

– Soshanguve

– Akasia reservoir

– Lotus Gardens

– Bakenkop

– Blair Athol Reservoir

– Sunderland Ridge

– Erasmia

– Saulsville reservoir

– Wonderbloom reservoir

– Louwlardia reservoir 2

– Kosmosdal

– Rooihuiskraal reservoir

– Klapperkop.
