Centurion residents report smash-and-grabs, police issue warning

Reports on social media indicated that a 'smash-and-grabber' was on the loose on the N14.

A “smash-and-grabber” is terrorising motorists on the N14 in Lyttelton towards Pretoria, social media reports on Monday morning.

Lyttelton police told Rekord that smash-and-grabs had risen in the area lately.
“There were a few incidents in the same area over the past month,” said spokesperson Dave Miller.

“I would advise motorists to be vigilant in traffic, especially in the early morning and afternoons. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. This can minimise your chances of falling victim to such a crime.”

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Divine Nkhuna said she has informed her colleagues in the crime prevention unit to patrol the area regularly in the hope of catching the perpetrators.

A local security company provided the following safety tips to avoid becoming a victim in a smash-and-grab incident:

– Lock your doors at all times.

– Do not open your windows to get into discussions with street vendors or anyone handing out flyers.

– Do not leave your handbag, cell phone or anything of value in plain sight.

– Always be conscious of your surroundings and remain alert when coming to an intersection or stopping your vehicle.

– If it’s late at night, slow down well in advance so that the light changes green by the time you reach the intersection.

– Keep an eye out for any obstacles on the road (e.g. tyres or rocks).

– Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to escape (i.e. drive away from the scene), if anything should happen.

– Install a smash-and-grab film.
