Fellow NPO celebrates tireless NGOs for continuous aid to help less-fortunate

“In a country where corruption is rife, even the very budgets supposedly allocated to non-profits and non-governmental organisations such as ourselves, ends up in the wrong hands, who use it for their personal enrichment, instead of serving its intended purpose.”

As part of celebrating World NGOs day, Basadi Ba Moshito (BBM) wishes to honour fellow organisations that were doing great work in helping the less privileged from their own pocket.

CEO of BBM, Antoinette Maluleke, said this day should celebrate and honour the many NGOs and NPOs that were operating without government funding.

“The small organisations doing great work for communities from their homes, garages, cars, small offices and their own pockets.

“Organisations that don’t have the full capacity to meet the bureaucratic requirements of the government for funding, organisations who just want to get the job done,” said Maluleke.

She called out individuals that sought to use NGOs as a vehicle in which they enriched themselves as opposed to serving the less fortunate.

“In a country where corruption is rife, even the very budgets supposedly allocated to non-profits and non-governmental organisations such as ourselves, end up in the wrong hands, who use it for their personal enrichment, instead of serving its intended purpose.”

In addition, Maluleke said BBM would like to celebrate private companies and individuals who continued to make a difference in the lives of the poor, marginalised, underprivileged and downtrodden communities.

Meanwhile, social development minister Lindiwe Zulu applauded the NGOs for being at the forefront in terms of implementing programmes that sought to uphold human rights and giving a voice to the most vulnerable in our society.

On World NGO Day, I thank all local NGOs as key partners of the government in initiating and implementing programmes in local communities that ensure no one is left behind. The Covid-19 pandemic provided a classic example of the critical role of the sector and also demonstrated what and how much we can achieve when we work together.”

Early this month, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a state of national disaster due to heavy rainfall and devastating floods that have affected seven provinces in our country.

“The NGO sector has been and continues to be at the forefront of our national rapid response, recovery and rebuilding efforts. It is for this reason that our government will continue to support this sector through the creation of an enabling legislative environment for it to flourish and contribute to our national development,” said Zulu.

World NGO Day is celebrated annually by the United Nations and international development organisations across the globe on February 27 to recognise and honour the fundamental contribution of NGOs and civil society organisations as crucial actors of change and their commitment to social justice and building a humane and inclusive society.

According to the social development department, SA has about 270 313 NGOs registered with the NPO Directorate in the department.

“As of March 2021, nearly 25 700 public benefit organisations (PBOs) were listed on the SARS website, representing an increase of just over 1 500 organisations since March 2020.

“The sector employs almost a million people, according to the 2020 Trialogue Business Handbook. Between the 2019/2020-2022/2023 financial years, a total of 69 484 NGOs across the country were funded by the Department of Social Development to the tune of R7-billion,” Zulu concluded.
