Saulsville residents invited to take part in clean up

The NGO is expecting 100 volunteers from its own ranks and 60 volunteers from the community.

A local NPO has invited residents to help clean up Moganwe river on World Water Day on March 22.

“World Water Day is celebrated annually to highlight the importance of freshwater and raise awareness of the global water crisis, focusing and advocating for sustainable development of water resources,” said Soulbent Projects co-founder Mashudu Makhado.

“Water is our basic human right and vital for society, the economy and the environment.”

The NGO was expecting 100 volunteers from its own ranks and 60 from the community.

The clean-up will kick off at 09:00 on the corner of Schuverberg Road and Mokwerekwere Street in Saulsville, Pretoria West Ext 6.

Partners involved with the effort include the City of Tshwane, environmental affairs, Sanbi, water and sanitation department, Coca-Cola, Aquelle Khula, Makhadzi project and Gauteng department of agriculture and rural development.

“We hope that this effort promotes education and awareness about the water crises and illegal dumping,” Makhado said.

Soulbent Projects held more than 220 clean-ups around Pretoria West last year and has no plans of slowing down this year.

The project, which was founded in 2008 by Mashudu and Millicent Makhado, wants to preserve the local environment by addressing pollution around local areas and rivers.

Makhado says that after clean-ups are done, the project wants to plant vegetable gardens that will help support the surrounding community.

The NGO held clean-ups from Monday to Friday as it is committed to making South Africa a litter-free country.

In a previous clean-up at the Moganwe River on January 3, Soulbent and partners collected more than 500 bags of litter.
