Sports personality of the year winner Andile ‘Sticks’ Dlamini said she was pleasantly surprised when her name was announced as she was paired with very strong contenders who had won laurels in their respective sports.
Dlamini said this during an interview after she won the prestigious award at the Gauteng Sports Awards.
“I couldn’t have won this award without the support of my teammates and the technical team, who provided constant support. I also praise the club for the support system they have created, which enables players to fulfil their potential,” she added.
Dlamini said that she would like to contribute significantly to other areas of the team in the future and that she had gained experience both from the domestic league and international competitions.
“I am keen on improving the skills of the younger generation of female players so that they can become more successful and reach even greater heights in their careers.
It is important to me that we create a strong legacy and inspire future generations to pursue their dreams with confidence and determination,” Dlamini emphasised.
Her peers described her as a good communicator on the field saying that as a modern-day goalkeeper, she was comfortable playing out from the back.
Furthermore, her peers marvelled at her level of confidence in whether she was playing with three defenders in front of her or four.
Sticks played a pivotal role as Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies clinched the Hollywoodbets Super League title for the third year in a row.
