Tshwane mayor expected to deal with poor service delivery
Stabilisation of the metro’s finance must take a centre stage.
The election of Cope’s Dr. Murunwa Makwarela meant it was no longer business as usual in the Tshwane metro.
This was according to EFF Tshwane chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu.
Ramabodu said Makwarela had a mammoth task ahead as he needed to secure a reliable supply of electricity and formalise more than 200 informal settlements in the metro.
“The DA had four executive mayors under coalitions. The adverse audit finding by the Auditor General was given to the DA government. The irregular expenditure of R10-billion is for the DA. The DA introduced Tshwane residents to Glad-Africa, Kratos deal and other corruption schemes.
“The glaringly disgraceful failures of the DA that plagued the city for the past seven years officially ended yesterday through a credible democratic process of election through secret ballot,” added the EFF’s regional chairperson.
He further said the EFF would work tirelessly to ensure that the newly elected mayor advanced the needs of the more than two million residents who have been neglected by the DA administration.
“Tshwane EFF will advocate for the new administration to expeditiously stabilise the finances of the city for the delivery of quality services.
“The potholes in our streets, which have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, must come to an end. Our communities with poor waste management which have harboured all vectors of disease must be eliminated.”
In addition, Ramabodu said his organisation would make sure that the incoming administration is held accountable to deliver services effectively and efficiently.
Makwarela defeated the DA’s mayoral candidate Cilliers Brink with 112 votes to Brink’s 101 out of the 213 cast.
According to reports the winner got the bulk of their votes from the ANC and EFF.
This is not the first time the ANC and the EFF have joined forces in unseating the DA.
Last month, the parties worked together in removing Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse through a motion of no confidence.
Makwarela’s election comes after the resignation of the DA’s Randall Williams, who stepped down as mayor on February 13.
