Market in Irene draws crowds under alternative banner
From magic wands, samurai swords, new-aged medicines and everything in between, the alt.market caters for alternative enthusiasts as well as those that are simply curious.
Every last Sunday of the month alt.market’s vendors invites residents to experience a free market that simply isn’t like any other.
Held at Railways Café in Irene, Centurion since 2016, the alt.market specialises in providing a platform for vendors whose goods cater to a niche market.

“Alt.market is a market with a whole lot of unusual vendors that are into the geeky, steampunk, retro and alternative sort of vibe, so we started this back in 2016 to give a space for people like this,” said organiser Simone Martiz.
From magic wands, samurai swords, new age medicines and everything in-between, the alt.market caters for alternative enthusiasts as well as those that are simply curious.
“You’re going to find things that you aren’t going to find anywhere else. The venue itself has a great vibe with live music, the eccentric design and everything else; so with the market and café, it’s the whole package.”

TJ Bryant of the Railways Café said the market has been a beloved part of the Railways Café experience due to how it complements the café’s aesthetic.
“Alt being alternative is exactly what we are; so we felt that they would fit our profile of everything alternative and different, and that’s what they provide something different to what the normal market is and we love that uniqueness,” Bryant said.

Residents are encouraged to look out for the upcoming market this April.
“Support your local vendors, keep it real, keep it strange and keep it weird,” Martiz concluded.
