Young Pretoria florist has a passion for nature
"I saw the beauty in nature and the potential it has to inspire great art."
Stefan Smuts has a passion for flowers and nature that has set his life on a unique path and he has no plans of slowing down any time soon.
The 26-year-old florist says his love of nature was sparked by his grandmother who showed him around her garden when he was a young boy.
“I saw the beauty in nature and the potential it has to inspire great art.”
At the age of 16 Smuts did his first wedding flower arrangements and has only further perfected his craft since.
Smuts specialises in weddings, after all, he studied event management at university.
“I’ve always enjoyed weddings, even from a young age.
I love making someone’s day special and the challenge is also something I enjoy.
Weddings are stressful and I enjoy the challenge that it brings me to get everything done on time.”
After seeing his talents go from strength to strength, Smuts’ friends convinced him to take part in the kykNET reality show Die Groenste Vingers (The Greenest Thumb).

Smuts says he was first hesitant to work in groups but ended up really enjoying his time on the show.
He also learned to not doubt himself or underestimate his abilities.
“I really learned a lot during my time on the show and I’m glad I took my friends’ advice.”
In 2018 Smuts founded his own company, Black Tulip Floral & Décor Styling.
With his business Smuts hopes to reach as many clients as possible and take his passion and craft to the next level.
“This business brings about its own challenges and I’m still learning as time goes by.
I hope I can get more people on board that can help me make the business a success soon.”
When he’s not arranging beautiful bouquets, Smuts enjoys nature photography as well as drawing and playing the piano.
“There is so much in nature that can inspire art and it is my passion to explore that, with both my photography and my flowers.”
